The UN Environment Programme’s Food Waste Index Report published this week said that the world wasted 19% of the food produced globally in 2022, or about 1.05 billion metric tons. There are at least one billion meals wasted worldwide daily. This does not bode well for our collective future, especially as 783 million people around the world face chronic hunger and many places experience a deepening food crisis. The report showed a notable growth in the coverage of food waste in low and middle-income countries. But ultimately, the ball is in the court of the developed world. It is likely to fall on them to lead in international cooperation and policy initiatives to deal with this unacceptable reality at a macro level.
