The government’s proposal to roll out a deep ocean mission to search for resources and develop deep-sea technologies is welcome. India has a long coastline, and nurturing its blue economy needs to be a national priority. Maharashtra, in particular, stands to gain much by tapping the blue economy all along its 720 km shoreline. Not only will such an endeavour enable the discovery of our vast marine resources, but it will also help to study climate change, which is now an increasingly important factor affecting our economy, as well as being a key contributory factor for the spread of zoonotic diseases like Covid. Climate change has hit Maharashtra’s agricultural sector, and viewing it from a blue economy perspective may help to understand it better. The cost of the mission has been estimated at Rs. 4,077 crore and it will be implemented in phases. It is surely an idea whose time has come.
