Asset monetization involves creation of new sources of public revenue by unlocking of the value of hitherto unutilized or underutilized government assets. Monetizing these assets that the government controls, including PSUs, is considered to be an important but relatively unexplored avenue of revenue generation for managing public resources. Unlocking the value of investment made in public assets will contribute to a more accurate estimation of their intrinsic worth, which would facilitate their better financial management over time. Asset monetization is an innovative option for financing new infrastructure development. The government’s belief in asset monetization is enshrined in the Union Budget presented earlier this year. The concept is worth exploring, but a lot will depend on the actual quality of the implementation. Infrastructure development will incur massive costs, and all possible financing options need to be experimented with to expedite the process. Asset monetization is one of them.
