While India's vaccination performance is impressive, we are still nowhere near 100% vaccination coverage, even for our adult population. As of now, around 35% of the adult population has received two doses and around 80% have got one dose. Around 800 million more doses need to be administered to cover our entire adult population. The last 25% of India would be the hardest to cover, with most of them comprising the weakest sections of society. Some (but still too few) states are acting systematically on it. But the government is not entirely at fault. Vaccine hesitancy amongst a section of the population (especially in rural areas) is also to blame. Coordinating national resources to fight Covid is an expensive, complex and dynamic task, needing the cooperation of all sections of society. However, the importance of timely vaccination to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic cannot be stressed enough. India is on the right track, even if the pace needs to be further expedited.
