Focusing on alternate fuels

11 JUL,2021 | MEDC

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has rightly stressed the need to focus on biofuels and alternate fuels to boost economic competitiveness. Maharashtra, in particular, is rich in sugar, corn, wheat and rice, all of which could be used to develop an ethanol economy. This would be cost-effective, especially in rural areas, where it would benefit millions of families associated with these crops and their ancillary activities. Agricultural production should be geared accordingly to that end. The strategic use of alternate fuels and renewable energies like wind, solar and biomass would enable domestic industry to enhance its competitiveness, provide local employment opportunities, and optimize natural resources. It would also help conserveIndia’s valuable foreign exchange and lead to a healthier trade balance. Harnessing alternate fuels for socioeconomic development is no longer optional.
