India's official data needs a quality upgrade, and that will have a quantifiable impact on public governance. To this end, accurate data should be captured at the village, panchayat, district, state and national levels. Of all these, reliable data at the lowest (i.e. village) level is of the utmost importance. Unless the integrity and timeliness of that data is firmly in place, public policy will not be able to become truly evidence-based and deliver in the service of the masses. If any policy situation is to be holistically grasped, the government cannot afford to compromise on the accuracy, timeliness, and relevance of continuous data collection. Employing high quality data in an integrated digital system with multiple stakeholders from both the public and private sectors will go far, both in enhancing the ease of doing business and also in improving the end-results of governance.
