Recent incentive schemes announced by both the state and central governments are likely to enhance the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) throughout the country. In Maharashtra for example, EVs will not face registration charges or road tax. Further, there are property tax rebates to install private charging infrastructure. This bodes well for the public acceptance of EVs. But the road ahead is long. As long as the supporting infrastructures (especially charging stations) are not firmly in place, it is difficult to expect people to shift to the new technology. Constantly rising petrol and diesel prices have changed the attitudes of many vehicle owners, but the alternatives also need to be financially viable. That will be the acid test facing India’s policymakers.
