The government approved an initial outlay of Rs. 19,744 crore for the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This is a welcome step. Creating the new hydrogen economy is a massive and delicate undertaking, needing huge policy support. Green hydrogen can decarbonize parts of the economy that other industrial processes cannot reach, and thus, enable countries to achieve their stated climate goals. Hydrogen is energy-dense, and burning it produces almost thrice the energy produced by burning natural gas, without generating any of the sulphates or monoxides through which fossil fuels damage air quality. India is projected to be a $20 trillion economy by 2047, and an adequate policy emphasis on hydrogen in our industrial ecosystem will aid it. Green hydrogen is tomorrow's energy.
