The government has proposed that companies importing laptops, tablets, PCs and small servers should register on the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) platform from November 1. While they will face import restrictions for a certain period after registering, when the restrictions will actually be enforced is not yet clear. The government has acknowledged global economic realities and said that the “import management system” will have enough wiggle room to review the norms in case of a sudden supply chain disruption or if there is a high and unanticipated demand for these products. Industry will be given credit against its exports as well as its domestic production, which can be used for imports. The formula for this is being worked out by policymakers.
