As more Indian public and private sector organizations move online, cybersecurity needs a relook. In the course of this inevitable transition, the protection of personal data becomes increasingly important. Stakeholder data is often sold or monetized in wayscompromising personal safety. This is unacceptable, considering various policy initiatives underway to expand the scope of Digital India. The problem is expected to rise exponentially as more segments of the economy get digitalized. A likely reason why Indian companies may not be investing enough in this area is due to a lack of regulatory compulsion. In the absence of legislation offering protection to the public, one could expect data to be monetized in ways potentially exposing users to danger. Fool-proof regulation is required to plug this gap at the earliest, thusfacilitatingthe growth of economic activity in India.
