India has achieved a lot on the vaccination front, but there are also developments pointing to the urgent need for the government to formulate a more strategic long-term policy. If things continue the way they have been so far, it is unlikely that the target of vaccinating all adults by the end of this year will be met. Given that adequate vaccine supply remains the bone of contention ever since the government started the vaccination programme eight months ago, it is difficult to follow the logic of opening up the plan for children (between 12 and 17) when even the majority of adults have not been fully vaccinated. The government’s concern regarding the third wave is understandable. However, by virtue of their age children have better immunity, and unless their caretakers and all senior citizens in their family are first fully vaccinated, we risk compromising much of the earlier good work. Policymakers have done a commendable job so far, but given the nature of this virus, we need some innovative thinking in our vaccination strategy.
