Bridging India's digital disparity

15 NOV,2020 | MEDC

The world often thinks of Indians as being IT savvy, but the fact is that 400 million of our compatriots still do not have access to the internet. This is particularly disconcerting in the age of Covid, when an increasing number of economic activities are shifting online. Policymakers could consider establishing a national digital institution to promote investments in digital infrastructure, especially those empoweringthe socioeconomically marginalized. Artificial intelligence (AI) is taking the world by storm, and there is a need for partnerships between Indian and foreign R&D institutes to design AI systems for the Indian context to reduce the digital divide. India’s digital sectors account for less than 10% of GDP, which is low compared to other emerging economies. It is time we get our policy priorities right and invest suitably in bridging the unacceptably high digital disparity in our country.
