India needs to focus on developing renewable energies, and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. To that end, the commercial use of green hydrogen has huge potential. Weight for weight, hydrogen has roughly thrice the energy value of diesel. However, its storage and distribution pose practical challenges. Yet, drastic cost reductions have been seen over time in the use of other renewable energies like solar and wind, and so, with the right policy support, there is no reason why green hydrogen also cannot become commercially viable. Green hydrogen has potential in diverse industrial sectors such as chemicals, iron and steel, fertilizer, refining and heating. Policy in this area should be technology-neutral since it is a nascent segment. A healthy business competition should be encouraged, and entrepreneurs looking to invest in this fuel of the future should be financially incentivized.
