The Union Budget has given a massive push to the development of connectivity infrastructure. The government envisions using rivers for cargo transportation. This will help reduce pressure on the currently decongested road and railway network and will facilitate the smoother movement of bulk cargo throughout the country. The railway ministry is also in the process of completing the ambitious Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project. This massive push in infrastructure development is commendable. Mega-projects such as the industrial corridors, DFC, Bharatmala and Sagarmala will improve connectivity and enhance the economic competitiveness of the nation. The cargo movement in the Ganga is expected to increase four times in the coming four years. All this will have direct implications on the industrial growth of the nation. It is also a welcome sign of the times that public private partnerships will be used to unleash rapid infrastructure development throughout India.
