India's demographic challenges

The headline finding of the fifth edition of the National Family Health Survey – that for the first time the proportion of women exceeded men at 1,020 against 1000 – is heartening. It shows that, at least as far as gender is concerned, India is becoming more like the world’s advanced nations. However, challenges also exist. More adult Indians are now overweight and anaemic. Though the share of underweight Indians (both men and women) has fallen, the share of those who are overweight and those who are anaemic has risen. That does not bode well for our long-term economic productivity. The government should take note of it, and rather than making serial announcements of fresh new socioeconomic schemes, focusing on maximizing the efficacy of the ones we already have should be the policy priority. That will also help to breathe new life into our existing development programmes.
