India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is rich in innate potential. It aims to transform the basic architecture, culture and approach of Indian education, not by a blanket jettisoning of the past, but by building on all the good aspects of it. That reveals a truly enlightened attitude, which is required all the more in today's age of Covid, wherein massive learning losses have been faced by the student community. The ground level measures that the NEP envisions would strengthen efforts at recovering deep losses on foundational literacy and numeracy, forced by school closures due to lockdowns. In the larger interests of schoolchildren throughout the country, all state governments should sink their ideological differences with the Centre and examine which aspects of the NEP could be implemented with immediate effect.
