Union Minister Nitin Gadkari rightly emphasized the rollout of FFVs in the Indian auto market within a year. FFVs have an internal combustion engine and are capable of operating on petrol and any blend of gasoline and ethanol or methanol. They are the perfect answer to promoting the use of alternative fuels. If India is to reduce its dependence on the volatile Middle East for its petroleum imports, proceeding in this direction is necessary. There are many benefits of transiting to an ethanol economy, not the least being that many of the raw materials needed for the production of ethanol are already found either directly or as by-products in our primary sector. FFVs are capable of running on 100% petrol or 100% ethanol, and are already available in countries such as Brazil, USA, and Canada. With appropriate policy support, they could soon become commercially viable in India also.
