There are thousands of villages all across Maharashtra where rains have failed both the kharif and the rabi crops. This is leading to a situation where there is no fodder or water for cattle to survive. The severe water shortage has made the current drought one of the worst one ever in Maharashtra. This drought has not affected just the crops but also the associated economy. Both the Marathwada and Vidarbha districts are notorious for high farmer suicide rates in the country and such situations will only accentuate them. A recent NITI Aayog report has presented a grim picture of Maharashtra’s water management efforts. It's Composite Water Management Index has flagged concerns reflecting not only poor planning at the ground level, but also policy omissions resulting in low irrigation potential, poor restoration of water bodies, average access to drinking water, and the treatment of waste. Unless Maharashtra manages to show substantial improvements in these vital areas, water-scarcity will not go away from the state.
