The main focus of the Biden Harris administration is likely to be on reining in the pandemic and reviving theAmerican economy. However, they will need to act on many diverse fronts simultaneously, including several where India has a strategic stake. The Democrats tend to favour a liberal immigration policy, normalize tariffs and trade, and tone down the ruinous global trade war with China. All this is in India’s interest. The new regime would rescind the earlier US decision to exit the WHO, and thus enable its vaccine programme to reach poorer countries, where it is most needed. That is also likely to benefit India. Additionally, this is the time for India to deepen strategic geopolitical partnership with the US to contain local bullies, and make South Asia a safer region for all of its inhabitants. There is a lot at stake, and,if we get our act right, we should soon see some positive results.
