It is believed that the high cost involved in developing a diesel engine for small vehicles to comply with the upcoming emission norms would not justify the investment required. In this regard, petrol is likely to make more economic sense, as the BS VI emission norms are likely to raise the price premium of diesel vehicles over petrol vehicles and nullify the higher fuel-efficiency benefit that diesel vehicles enjoyed over them in the past. All in all, it is a step in the right direction as even though, per liter, diesel contains more energy than petrol, it also tends to be a more polluting fuel, whose usage necessitates some regulatory checks and balances. Progressively stringent norms need to be rolled out in India to reduce the amount of disease-causing particulate matter and pollution in the air.
