The benchmark equity indices maintained their record-setting run this week, with the Sensex breaching the 71,000 mark. On an upward trajectory for three consecutive days, the index jumped by 969.5 points (or 1.37%) on Friday, to settle at 71483.7. The Nifty 50 also climbed 274 points or 1.29% to 21456.7. Equity investors became richer by Rs. 8.11 trillion this week alone. The total bid for initial public offerings (IPOs) crossed a trillion rupees. All stock-market-related indicators are encouraging. Even though a booming stock market does not always have a direct correlation with economic growth, it often affects business activity through the creation of liquidity. Liquid equity markets make investment less risky – and more attractive – to a larger range of stakeholders. That should be our policy objective.
