The government of Maharashtra has approved a Rs. 252 crore economic package for the people in the coastal areas of the Konkan affected by cyclone Tauktae, which hit the area last week. The affected districts include Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. This financial assistance will go a long way towards restoring normalcy in those areas. However, Tauktae was not the first cyclone, and it won’t be the last one, to hit several ecologically vulnerable parts of Maharashtra. With global warming and climate change upon us, we can expect to see more of such calamities striking us with rising frequency. Money alone will not help solve these problems. Much of the Konkan has undergone substantial deforestation, and unless policymakers step in to reverse this unfortunate trend, the locals will continue to suffer even more than they currently are. Every cyclone reminds us of our insignificance compared to Mother Nature, and that we better learn to play the game by His rules.
