This year the monsoon has covered the country two weeks ahead of time. Thanks to the good rains so far, the sowing of kharif crops has also picked up pace and the area under cultivation was double the figure of the corresponding period last year. However, the monsoon is uneven in its coverage. For example, after a few initial showers, Mumbai has not witnessed any rain of the kind expected in the end of June. However, India’s agricultural sector – the main beneficiary of the monsoon – has been lucky this time. After 2013, it is only this year that the monsoon has advanced so rapidly. Data showed that even before the first month of the monsoon was over kharif crops had been sown in around 30% of the area in which these crops are grown in the entire season. 2020 has not been a good year for our economy, but the unpredictable monsoon will probably present us a pleasant surprise.
