Emphasize horticulture

24 APR,2022 | MEDC

The southwest monsoon forecast this year brings a mixed message for Indian farmers. It is a wake-up call for our agriculture. Apart from the Ukrainian crisis, the rising annual mean land temperature and the water stress in northwest India will have a long-term impact on agriculture. The worsening environmental stress calls for large changes in agriculture. An economically viable alternative is to find ways to shift the balance of output towards horticultural produce. Horticulture has become an increasingly sustainable venture for small and marginal farmers. A positive related development has been that the area under vegetable cultivation increased by 10% over the past five years. Policymakers need to carefully reform the entire logistics chain if this environmentally friendly trend is to intensify.
