The second wave of Covid has exposed India’s wobbly health infrastructure. Hospitals in most metros are stretched to their limits. With daily infections crossing a lakh, more regions are announcing lockdowns, thus raising concerns about another slowdown in economic activity, just as India emerges from its deepest post-Independence recession. A sustainable recovery now depends on quality health infrastructure investment, involving both public and private sectors. Infection patterns also need to be carefully studied. Families from lower income groups are at higher risk of viral transmission due to cramped living spaces and lack of access to testing facilities and treatment. Infection rates are higher in urban areas consisting of lower income groups and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly compromised. The government has shown the political and financial will to tackle this issue, and so it should be able to guarantee access to a minimum robust healthcare infrastructure in suchexceptional conditions, especially for the socioeconomically marginalized. That’s not asking for much.
