The pandemic and its accompanying lockdowns have led to a huge decentralization in many industries. Education is no exception. As educational institutions across the world have eliminated their physical classes, online instruction has come to the forefront. This is likely to have unpredictable consequences, especially in India. The use of digital tools could sharpen the socioeconomic divide amongst students that already pervades our classrooms. Virtual reality technology can be used to create fabulous learning experiences … but whether that will really benefit those at the bottom of the pyramid remains to be seen. Corporates and tech companies will see education (and healthcare) as huge business opportunities. Education will become increasingly a lifelong endeavour and an increasing number of adults are likely to return to the classrooms. Covid-19 has slowed down the world, but accelerated change in several important socioeconomic spheres – the education system being certainly one of them.
