The government's declaration that pandemic-related controls on international flights to and from India will cease from March 27 is a welcome shot in the arm for the country's economy, especially its beleaguered tourism industry. Two years into the pandemic, India's tourism and hospitality sector has been badly hit, and it still is not anywhere close to its pre-Covid levels. With a large amount of national and state-level tourism today dependent on aviation, opening up the sector is a welcome step. The government – no longer an active player in the domestic aviation industry after the sale of Air India – needs to return to playing a supportive role, and aid in the creation of stable and healthy competition. There are still many questions to be answered about how a mature civil aviation sector in India promoting domestic tourism would look like. Covid has impacted the entire tourism ecosystem, and reopening and rebranding tourist destinations will necessitate a policy approach involving all stakeholders, including private players.
