With cities all over the world becoming more congested and the threat of pollution worsening by the day, taking a well- planned break is fast becoming a norm. India needs to capitalize on its innate tourist potential and prove to the world that low cost does not imply low quality. In this context, it is heartening to note that regulatory changes are benefiting the hospitality sector, which is at the heart of this industry. Some of the impacts of GST are likely to entice a part of the vital Meeting, Incentives, Conference and Exhibition (MICE) traffic that India loses out on. India is a supply-constrained market. Anything that reduces costs (even slightly) will lead to a huge increase in demand, and market forces will take over from there. If we get our infrastructure and cleanliness in place, there is reason to believe in the massive tourism potential of India, particularly ecotourism. In this regard, streamlining guidelines across states and adopting enhanced online procedures will go a long way in boosting the attractiveness of the industry, both to Indians and foreigners.
