The people delivered a strong mandate in the recently concluded election. More than a vote for any particular party, it was clearly a call for the continuity of economic policy. This is a welcome development as it shows that the Indian electorate has matured and ranks economic issues higher than those of caste and regional considerations. The importance of the continuation of economic policy can never be overemphasised, and, particularly in a democracy, that is typically the first casualty of a change in government. The need of the hour is to build a socially inclusive India, and for that political stability is imperative. A new narrative is now unfolding, and the immediate focus needs to remain on employment generation, as India cannot afford the luxury of jobless growth. Other key issues to address urgently include speeding up disinvestment, reviving NBFCs, streamlining GST, empowering farmers, promoting entrepreneurship, rationalizing subsidies, and dealing effectively with America and China in the changing world order.
