The RBI Governor has said that the second wave of Covid now upon us will not derail growth. That is, indeed, a morale-booster. With over 50,000 new cases, many parts of the country (and especially in Maharashtra) are seeking a spike in infections. What is particularly worrying is that most of these infections are caused by some new strains of the virus. However, vaccination throughout the country is proceeding at an unprecedented pace. Maharashtra tops the list with 4 million jabs as of now. As long as we focus on revivingthe bottom of the pyramid, Covid will not be able to eliminate the green shoots of recovery in our economy. The government has cast the security net wider and poured more money into social schemes like the rural employment programme. This will help in promoting the sustainability of the growth process. Obviously, there still remain some obstacles to be overcome, but the worst socioeconomic impacts of Covid are now probably behind us.
