Speeding up vaccination

18 JUL,2021 | MEDC

The threat of a third Covid wave in India is now real, and the best prevention for it is vaccination. To promote herd immunity, a certain minimum proportion of the population needs to be vaccinated, and at the earliest. Failure to do so could have severe socioeconomic consequences, especially in the rural parts of India which have borne the brunt of the second wave. The key to speeding up vaccination is, firstly, to ease supply-side bottlenecks, and then achieve consensus on a transparent formula for inter-state vaccine allocation. To this end, the government may need to remove legal impediments to vaccine imports, and also facilitate the process for overseas players to establish local operations. Universal vaccination is now not a luxury, but an absolute necessity.
