The Maharashtra Cabinet has cleared a Rs. 11,500 crore package for the flood affected areas in Konkan and Western Maharashtra. The package will be used for relief, reconstruction, and execution of long-term plans to avoid future disasters in the concerned areas. The CM has rightly called for a comprehensive and permanent policy to tackle disasters caused by natural calamities. In the wake of Covid, disaster management planning needs a huge boost, and not all socioeconomic issues can be resolved simply by pouring money into them. Maharashtra faces a unique situation wherein the frequency of both floods and droughts is rising. Unless we get our water management policies right, much of Maharashtra’s economic development will remain compromised. Maharashtra has a potentially rich blue economy, and we should learn to use it to our healthy advantage rather than allow it to overwhelm us. The time to take adequate steps in that direction is now.
