Food processing is a sunrise industry in India. It has attracted Rs. 50,000 crore FDI in the past nine years, according to the Prime Minister. India needs to stress on reducing post-harvest losses and food wastage, by focusing on appropriate infrastructure development. India’s food processing capacity has witnessed significant growth in the past nine years leading to a 150% rise in the export of processed foods. The capacity of our food processing sector has also risen from 12 lakh tonnes to over 200 lakh tonnes. This is an advantage that we should maximize, as it will help us reduce our dependency on imports in feeding a population of well over a billion.
