The Prime Minister has stressed the need for greener alternatives in the automobile industry's innovation efforts. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has also said that those scrapping old vehicles increase the revenue of automobile companies and so should get some discounts for their new purchases. The Finance Ministry has been approached to give GST concessions for such discounts. Given the effects of global warming and climate change on our economy, such incentives havebecome necessary. With the prices of diesel and petrol being what they are today, vehicles running on such fuels are becoming increasingly cost-ineffective for the majority of Indian users. The focus on promoting electric vehicles is appropriate, but the supporting infrastructure for this massive transition also needs to be built rapidly. That is the onlyway to facilitate a smooth shift to greener alternatives on Indian roads.
