The Union Budget has given many incentives to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. This has not come a day too soon considering how much environmental pollution exists all over the country. A beginning has been made but much more needs to be done. For example, the current technology does not render the production of small EVs commercially viable, and that is a major impediment to their large-scale adoption. However, the future holds hope. A normal monsoon is expected in August-September and that will prop-up consumer demand in the hinterland. Policymakers should push for making the country’s energy sector attractive for foreign investors. Strategic fiscal tweaks should also be provided domestically, given that the impact of the GST reduction is more pronounced on larger vehicles than on smaller ones. India’s energy policy is too important to be left to chance, and with rising purchasing power in rural areas, a rapid shift to clean and affordable fuels becomes imperative.
