Enhancing India's statistical system

04 JUN,2019 | MEDC

The vice-chairman of the Niti Aayog recently said that India’s statistical system needs to modernize and align with international best practices to improve the policymaking process.  Its thorough revamp is certainly warranted so that real-time data can be available for informed decision-making. Of late, there have been allegations that government data is not as unbiased as it seems to appear. Such accusations, whether real or imagined, need to be set at rest once and for all. All the technical strategies employed in this process should be made available in the public domain. They also need to be soundly critiqued by the professional community, to ensure that there is a consensus on the way ahead, including compatibility with global best practices.
