Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) is the need of our times. Investing in ESG is essentially investing in sustainability … it may not fetch immediate returns, but it benefits our ecosystem in the long-run. Both public and private sectors need to factor into their strategies the impact of climate change, and realizethat investing in a low carbon economy poses one of the most socially responsible opportunities of our times. Covid has clearly shownus how heavily we depend on the environment. This needs to reflect in our investment strategies, which now need to be developed within a framework of long-term green revenue generation. While ESG adoption by issuers and investors in India is still at a nascent stage, there is room for growth. As India integrates with the global value chain, more overseas companies will gain confidence in their Indian collaborators who are able to demonstrate compliance with internationally accepted ESG benchmarks. This is an opportunity we cannot afford to miss.
