Unprecedented flooding in much of the country is becoming increasingly common. In Maharashtra, both Sangli and Kolhapur have been badly affected, with hundreds being displaced. The armed forces have been deployed for flood-relief operations, when they should be used elsewhere. Thousands have been evacuated from flood prone areas, and a nimble coordination between all arms of the government now has a key role to play in normalizing the situation. Wetlands and mudflats throughout India need to be sufficiently protected and water conservation efforts speeded up. Climate change has affected the monsoon pattern adversely, and we now need to keep in mind the effect of any new project on the increasingly fragile ecosystem. Environmental clearances may be cumbersome to comply with but they are necessary to minimize the hostile effects of climate change. The real secret of survival (and growth) is to never challenge Mother Nature. In man’s quest to prove his supremacy, that simple truth should always be remembered.
