Data was aptly described as the new oil some years ago, but the pandemic has presented it in a different league altogether. At least in the developed world, data research and analytics is valued much more now than it was before Covid emerged on the scene. A new Covid variant has been identified this week, and early data analysis shows that this variant has a large number of mutations that need further study. That being the case, the importance of (reliable) data is going to rise exponentially. Just because we are unable to quantify some scientific facts, it would be dangerous to presume that no problem lurks beneath the surface. It is worth recalling here what Einstein said … not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts.
