Connecting the last mile

30 AUG,2022 | MEDC

The Finance Minister has exhorted banks to identify and cover eligible beneficiaries of various government schemes. The Indian banking system has just emerged from some rather troubled times, largely due to reduced political interference in its functioning. As things stand, banks need to announce dates for their outreach programmes well in advance and they could also involve more banking correspondents if required, particularly in rural areas. With a presence in far-flung parts of the country, India's banking system is potentially influential, and it could facilitate genuinely inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic growth. If financial last-mile connectivity does become a reality in India, our banking system would have truly succeeded in creating an environment for policy change in the country. Never before has the need for creating such an ambience been as critical as it is now.
