The world is waiting with bated breath for a reliable vaccine to counter Covid. In India, policymakers will need to leverage the infrastructure deployed for the immunization programme and ensure that it reaches the socioeconomically marginalized. We have, over the years, developed a highly successful universal immunization programme, but the logistical challenges thrown at us by the Covid vaccination are going to dwarf all our previous endeavours. Technology will enable keeping track of the population to ensure that they receive the full dose of the vaccine. The government can also create synergies using the existing network of medical and paramedical staff to keep track of larger samples than the ones they are used to so far. The vaccine is going to be a game-changer, but one should not jump at it without a clear understanding of its possibleside-effects and after-effects … otherwise, the cure could be potentially worse than the disease. Under the circumstances, that is a risk we cannot afford to take.
