Unchecked flooding across the coastal areas of Maharashtra every monsoon is a cause for concern. This year’s floods have so far officially claimed over 200 lives. Landslides at several places have blocked arterial roads, thus enhancing inaccessibility to places most in need of aid. Central government has approved Rs. 700 crore for flood relief to Maharashtra, and the state government is also soon announcing a relief package for the concerned areas. Many districts of Konkan have recently been witnessing natural calamities more frequently. The moot question to ask is why, even three generations after independence, basic infrastructure services in coastal Maharashtra continue to remain unreliable? Climate change will majorly impact Maharashtra, and the annual recurrence of such unfortunate events cannot be ruled out. We need to prepare ourselves adequately for them.
