Coronavirus infections are soaring exponentially, with only dim prospects of the curve flattening anytime soon. In the near future at least, we will have to learn to live with it. The government of Maharashtra is doing the right thing by attempting to gradually unlock the economy, which has suffered huge damage. The CMO has rightly said that the danger is yet to pass, but economic activity cannot be completely halted even as we fight the pandemic. A lot of the success of the government’s strategy depends on how seriously people follow social distancing norms and rules regarding their conduct in public spaces. Being one of the most socioeconomically unequal countries in the world, India remains particularly vulnerable to coronavirus. However, with the vast majority of working Indians experiencing income loss and its accompanying deprivations, getting back to business is now almost non-negotiable.
