The finance ministry will hold up to 65 meetings between October 10 and November 14 this year with various government departments to weave new ideas into the forthcoming budget. Those extensive consultations will assess the spending pattern so far this year, tax collection growth against the nominal GDP growth, and look into any extra spending needed this fiscal year – especially for food and fertilizer subsidies. Fiscal credibility is expected to remain a policy priority. The government is unlikely to resort to populist measures despite the impending elections, and the trend of improving the expenditure mix, particularly higher spending on infrastructure development is likely to continue. That would bode well for the industry.
