India was ranked 94th amongst 107 countries on the Global Hunger Index 2020. This puts us behind even our smaller neighbours like Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It serves as a wake-up call for the country as this index is essentially an indicator of poor nutrition and its ill-effects. In the battle against Covid, the best vaccine is natural immunity, and access to nutritive food forms a key component of it. In this context, a strategic use of bio-fortified produce can go a long way in meeting the universally agreed and UN-backed goal of zero hunger by 2030. Policymakers should ensure that all such genetically modified and bio-fortified produce is traded separately in APMCs, and consumers are made aware of what it offers. Once their health benefits get established, the production and consumption of such products will automatically get a boost, leading to a win-win situation for all stakeholders.
