Managing new variants

06 DEC,2021 | MEDC

In the wake of the discovery of the Omicron variant, India needs to create a cohesive strategy to deal with emerging forms of Covid. Every time a new variant is discovered – and more will surely be – policymakers cannot formulate a separate approach for each. One of the clearest lessons of Covid is that India needs a stronger foundation for disaster management planning and response. We have strict rules for international travellers, but the paradox is that only those who are vaccinated can travel by air, and only those who travel that way risk infecting others globally. Hopefully, a clearer picture should emerge as better data (both qualitatively and quantitatively) on transmission soon becomes available. There is no need to press the panic button – at least as yet – for both governments and individuals. But we now have to learn to live with Covid, and accept the fact that its path to becoming an endemic ailment will not be smooth.
