To improve job prospects, the government plans to soon upgrade the National Career Service (NCS) portal. The revamped portal is expected to improve job matching, recommend personalized skilling programmes and provide other employment-related services leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. The upgraded website will also have micro-level sites for meeting the requirements of states and districts. But while such initiatives are welcome, it should be noted that they are not a panacea for our employment-related ills. The fundamental issue in India is that the economy does not generate enough meaningful work. It is to be hoped that sustaining higher economic growth will help jumpstart the private-investment cycle and create employment.
