Combatting poverty via employment

07 JUN,2022 | MEDC

Combatting poverty via employment: In recent decades, India has pulled millions out of abject poverty. However, it may not be enough as the ensuing prosperity has not been evenly distributed. Besides, vast sections of the population continue to occupy a precarious position, wherein unusual events like a pandemic (which do not seem so unusual nowadays) can plunge them back into destitution. The only long-term solution for combating poverty is employment, with education and skill development being a prerequisite for that. Education and stable urban employment are the core building blocks of middle-class aspirations, but the reality in most Indian cities today is hardly conducive to its realization. This unfortunate fact needs to be recognized and rectified by policymakers, before we lose our demographic advantage.
