Data and Indian Agriculture

For decades, water, fertiliser and pesticide have been the standard agricultural inputs in India. It is now time to add data to that list. Satellites, drones and AI devices are today being put together in innovative ways to collect critical data pertaining to the land and soil, for enhancing agricultural productivity and output. The combination of cheap data and mobile phone penetration has also enabled many Indian farmers to deal with economic issues pertaining to procuring inputs at low cost, to selling their produce at the best prices. Drone-enabled solutions are gaining popularity, although cost still remains an issue. We still have a long distance to cover for maximizing data usage in Indian agriculture, but a meaningful start has certainly been made.
