Digital Health ID

10 OCT,2021 | MEDC

The official launch of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is timely. It will provide citizens a unique digital health ID linked to a personal health record (PHR), as well as the Aadhaar Card.  The ABDM could significantly increase the efficacy and transparency of healthcare delivery systems across India. However, there remain some valid concerns about such digital systems in the key areas of privacy and consent, especially because India does not still have a personal data protection law. Naturally, millions of individuals (along with vested interests) will seek access to the PHR servers where the data will be stored. Any leakages therein could prove costly. The ABDM is a good idea, but, for it to succeed, we first need to pay closer attention to the nitty-gritties of cybersecurity.
